Apple Brings AVS to iPhone 17 Charging

new iphone 17 series

On September 10, Apple launched the new iPhone 17 series and at the same time, introduced a new 40W charger on its website. For the first time, this charger uses a new protocol called AVS (Adjustable Voltage Supply). According to Apple, this charger lets the iPhone 17 reach 50% charge in 20 minutes, providing much faster charging.

However, AVS isn’t entirely new. It was originally designed for high-power devices such as laptops, supporting up to 240W (known as EPR-AVS). The version used this time is SPR-AVS, a low-voltage version for devices under 100W, published by USB-IF last year (now part of PD3.2).

AVS Charger

AVS works better than PPS and older fast charging protocols. The charger can adjust voltage continuously and current separately, while also handling the voltage conversion. This helps reduce heat generation inside the phone, and lets it maintain high charging power for longer.

Now that Apple is using AVS, we expect it to become more common in the future. Most of our 45–65W chargers can be upgraded to support AVS. We’re testing this, and if you’re interested, please contact our team for detailed information.
