The EU has introduced updates under the Common Charger Directive (Directive (EU) 2022/2380), part of the Radio Equipment Directive (RED). These updates will impact a wide range of handheld electronic devices, including smartphones, tablets, and especially Bluetooth speakers and TWS earbuds, which are more likely to be affected.
What’s Changing?
Starting December 28, 2024, all applicable devices must have a USB-C charging port that meets the standards set by EN IEC 62680-1-3:2022.
If a device supports fast charging (defined as over 5V, 3A, or 15W), it must also support the Power Delivery (PD) standard, in line with EN IEC 62680-1-2:2022.
Packaging Requirements
The new rule also says that companies must sell devices with the option to buy them with or without a charger. This allows customers to reuse their existing chargers, which helps reduce electronic waste.
Additionally, companies need to clearly state on the packaging whether a charger is included:
If the charger is included: The packaging must clearly display a pictogram showing that a charger is inside. It should also include details about the charger’s power and whether it supports fast charging protocols like PD.
If the charger is not included: The packaging must feature a pictogram indicating the absence of a charger.
