In our previous article, we introduced the EU’s new battery regulation—Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 on the removability and replaceability of portable batteries.
According to the regulation, a portable battery shall be considered readily removable by the end-user where it can be removed from a product using commercially available tools, without requiring specialized tools. Furthermore, it shall be considered readily replaceable where, after its removal from an appliance, it can be substituted by another compatible battery without affecting the product’s function, performance, or safety.
To better understand how this is shaping product design, here’s a recent example from a Bluetooth speaker project featuring a portable removable battery.
The battery is easy to install and just as easy to remove. The back cover can be opened using a regular screwdriver that’s easy to find on the market. Inside, the battery is simply plugged into a standard connector, and no additional tools are needed.
The battery itself is a commonly available model, so users can easily buy a replacement if needed. This makes future replacements simple and convenient.
For everyday use, the speaker charges via USB-C, so users don’t need to take the battery out to charge it.
This design is simple, practical, and in line with the new EU requirements. Let’s stay tuned for more designs, and feel free to share your ideas with us.
